Choosing A Stylist
Choosing a stylist: What should you ask?
Congratulations on your engagement and on becoming a bride to be. Every bride has different tastes and styles but many don’t know what they want or how to hire a makeup artist and what questions to ask. That’s why I’ve put together my top questions you should be asking your hair and makeup artist to help you decide if they are right for you.
First a little about me. I am a hair and makeup artist and one thing I know is that all brides want to look beautiful on their wedding day, regardless of their style, budget etc. I specialise in helping the naturally chic bride-to-be look stunning knowing that her hair and makeup application is flawless, natural, long lasting and expresses her own personal style so that she looks amazing on camera and radiates confidence and beauty on the most important day of her life
Many brides to be don’t always understand the importance of getting the makeup right on the wedding day. The bride is the focus of a wedding day and, sure, your guests will be admiring your dress but they will be also looking at your face equally as much. Also, you have to look good for your photos (you’d be surprised how many brides end up unhappy with the way they look in their photos). So it’s important to get it right. A professional artist will work with you to understand your needs and desires and will make you feel relaxed and comfortable on your wedding day. They will understand weddings and what’s involved and be able to recommend makeup services that will have you looking fabulous and feeling confident and beautiful. Here are a few things to understand from your bridal makeup artist.

Will my hair and makeup last?
The dress won’t change much as the day progresses, but your makeup will – especially after all the people you’ll be kissing and there will be photography and video all day! It’s vitally important that your makeup artist uses quality products, professionally and hygienically applied to ensure that the final look is photo friendly and lasts from morning to evening. I provide the best in professional products to prepare the face correctly which helps a long lasting finish. I also airbrush which gives a flawless finish for photos and is long wearing, so it will last through the ceremony and reception with only minimal touch ups. I can also provide my brides with a touch up kit so they can do minor touch ups throughout the day.
Will my hair and makeup suit me?
No bride should ever walk down the aisle with a hair and makeup look they are not comfortable with. A professional makeup artist should work with the bride to suggest the most ideal wedding make up look based on your individual style and needs whether you’re a “lipgloss and mascara” vs ‘full blown makeup” kind of girl. It’s no use suggesting a heavy smokey eye and bold lip if you only wear a little bit of makeup. The aim should always be to the best version of yourself on the day. As a professional makeup artist I offer a consultation or bridal trial where I work with you one on one to create the exact make up look you desire (that we review during the trial to ensure you are absolutely happy). I look at factors such as skin tone, hair colour and style on the day and the colour and design of the dress to chart out a makeup look that will have you looking radiant and perfectly flawless for your special event.

What if I don’t like it?
This is why we have a trial. Some brides think that the trial is an opportunity for the stylist to make more money, but I can assure you nothing could be further from the truth. A trial is “the hair and facial equivalent” of trying on your wedding dress before the wedding to ensure it’s absolutely perfect and that you like it. It’s why I recommend all brides have a trial. You can read more about what happens at a bridal trial here.
On the wedding day, there are time pressures and there’s no time to try different colours and hairstyles, With a trial, a bride gets to wear the wedding day look (hair and makeup) to see how it lasts and ensure she likes it. And most importantly, it gets around the “what if I don’t like it” scenario.
I have skin flaws but don’t wear a lot of makeup? How will you deal with this?
Many of us have skin issues, brides included. Whether its acne or hyperpigmentation, dark circles and so on, a professional makeup artist should understand how to minimise flaws/imperfection, highlight features and achieve the desired look using the least amount of product. It certainly isn’t about layering a tonne of product on the skin which can render the look heavy. My consultations include a thorough skin analysis where I recommend a skin regime leading up to the wedding. I’m also trained in corrective beauty to highlight the good and minimise the not-so-good so that you look perfect!

Do you come to me?
You should ask if your makeup artist comes to you. Some artists are mobile artists – meaning that they come to you, whilst others work out of their own premises. A mobile artists (which I am) minimises the need for you to travel from one location to another – it’s often so much easier to get ready in one place where you relax and enjoy getting ready in the comfort of your own environment.
How long will it take to complete makeup on the day?
A professional makeup artist should work quickly and efficiently. It’s a really big day so you want to minimise the time getting ready time. Many professionals should take no longer than around 45mins. I prepare a full running sheet for every wedding so that we both clearly understand the schedule for the day to allow plenty of time to get ready so that you are relaxed and ready for the photographer or the ceremony
How far advance do I book?
Many professional makeup artists are booked out well in advance so it’s important to secure them early. Ask them what their process is. In my business I take bookings up to 18 months in advance. A booking is secured when the deposit has been paid.
